Tattoo Aftercare Instructions

Healing Time:
Tattoos typically heal within 2–3 weeks, though this can vary based on skin type and individual care. Remember: a fresh tattoo is an open wound — keep it clean and protected.

What You’ll Need:

  • Antibacterial Soap (unscented, e.g., Dial Original)

  • Tattoo Ointment (Aquaphor or Hustle Butter) — avoid petroleum-based products

  • Unscented Lotion (Lubriderm, Aveeno, or Curel)

  • Plastic Wrap (for the first 2 nights only)

Day 1

  • Your artist will wrap your tattoo after the session.

  • After 3 hours, carefully remove the wrap.

  • Wash your hands, then gently clean the tattoo with warm water and unscented antibacterial soap using clean fingertips.

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel or air dry.

  • Apply a thin layer of ointment (do not over-apply).

  • Before bed, wrap the tattoo in plastic wrap to protect your bedding.

Days 2–4 (Clean 2x Daily)

  • Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo.

  • Gently clean the tattoo with warm water and antibacterial soap.

  • Remove any residue, pat dry, and apply a light layer of ointment.

  • Wrap before bed each night; in the morning, wash again and leave it unwrapped during the day.

  • If the tattoo gets dirty or exposed in public, wash it immediately to avoid infection.

Days 5–14 (Clean 2x Daily)

  • Around Day 4 or 5, your tattoo will begin to peel and itch — this is a normal part of healing.

  • Do not scratch, pick, or peel your tattoo. Let it flake naturally.

  • 🔁 Stop using ointment and switch to an unscented lotion (e.g., Lubriderm, Aveeno, or Curel). This helps keep the skin moisturized without clogging pores.

  • Continue to wash with antibacterial soap, dry completely, and apply lotion twice daily.

  • Stay consistent until your tattoo is fully healed.

❌ What Not to Do While Your Tattoo Heals (First 2–3 Weeks)

Your fresh tattoo is an open wound — keeping it clean and protected is key to proper healing.

🚫 Avoid Water Exposure

  • Do not soak your tattoo — no baths, swimming, or hot tubs.

  • Stay out of oceans, pools, rivers, lakes, and jacuzzis until fully healed.

☀️ Protect From Sun & Friction

  • Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight — UV rays can irritate and damage healing skin.

  • Avoid tight or abrasive clothing over the tattooed area, as rubbing can cause irritation or ink loss.

💪 Sweat & Exercise Precautions

  • Avoid heavy workouts and excessive sweating for at least 3 days — ideally, give it a full week to reduce the risk of irritation or infection.

  • After that, if you exercise, keep your tattoo covered and shower immediately using antibacterial soap.

❗ Prevent Infection

  • Never let your tattoo touch dirty or public surfaces (e.g., bar tops, gym equipment, restaurant tables).

  • If you have pets, use fresh bedding and keep animals away from your tattooed area.

  • Do not let others touch your tattoo unless they’ve washed their hands.

🧼 Be Gentle

  • Do not scratch, peel, or pick during the peeling phase.

  • Do not shave over your healing tattoo.

Alternative Healing Methods

Second skin options, like Saniderm or Derm Shield, can be used to heal your tattoo. These are effective and low-maintenance options that protect your tattoo while it heals.

Important: Be sure to research the best brands for second skin to ensure you choose the most suitable option for your skin and tattoo type.
